Dear Austin, Elmar and I were deeply saddened when we saw that prayer intentions via the Vigil Lamp at St. Bonaventure's were for Nancy and that she had passed away. I am so sorry we did not attend her funeral since we did not know about it. God bless you, Austin. We will keep you, as well as Nancy, in our prayers. Martha and Elmar

I keep thinking and dreaming of Nancy and the many things that connected us. It is impossible to find all the words to describe who she was to me and to many of her students. Nonetheless, I’ll try to share some of my thoughts about Nancy. I first met Nancy Fernandes back in 2003. I was a brand-new Ontario teacher and she was one of the first educators to take me under her wing as a mentor. She was an English teacher at Earl Haig Secondary School. She became throughout the years more than just a mentor, she became my friend. In fact, she became a family friend… as well as her husband Austin. When my wife got pregnant and I mentioned I would be missing the first ultrasound, because I had to teach during my teaching practicum in Nancy’s class, she ordered me to go to my wife Amy’s bedside. When my son Dean Christopher was born, she was always fond of him…when she first met him as a newborn she would always fawn over him and call him her little Dean Christopher ...today little Dean Christopher is 15 years old and was one of her pallbearers ….Nancy never had children of her own, but would have made a great mother….Nancy would always have a soft spot for my son Deany and my daughter Joanna. As an educator, Nancy had a unique style to her teaching and her students would address her as Dr. Fernandes, because she had a Ph.D. in English Literature. She would often tell me, " Nick you can call me Nancy, no need for formalities." She was quite a character. Nancy was very assertive, outgoing and never backed down from a fight. She was very religious, believed in what was morally right and always tried to be the best teacher possible. Nancy, you will be missed. RIP my friend. Until we meet again....
